Swiss Army reorganizes logistics by 2028

According to various Swiss media reports, the Swiss Army is fundamentally restructuring its logistics. The background is the changed security policy situation in Europe as well as the political mandate from the Federal Council to significantly strengthen the army’s defense capabilities. For the comprehensive expansion of the army, investments of around 10 billion francs are planned in the coming years. A significant portion of these funds will flow into the establishment of a capable and crisis-resistant logistics system as well as the modernization of the corresponding infrastructure.

At the center of the reorganization is the Army Logistics Base (LBA), which aims to align its structures, processes, and capabilities consistently with the requirements of potential national defense by the end of 2028. A central focus is on returning to a war-capable logistics system. This includes the expansion of protected storage for ammunition, fuels, and spare parts, a more robust supply chain, and the ability to reliably supply troops and materials even under difficult operational conditions.

At the same time, transport, maintenance, and supply processes are to be made more resilient so that they function even in the event of cyberattacks or compromised infrastructure. The LBA is reviewing its organization, locations, and internal processes for this purpose. The goal is to make materials available more quickly, shorten decision-making paths, and improve collaboration between the various logistics and command organizations. Additionally, digitalization and modern information systems will be further developed, with an emphasis on solutions that remain operational even with limited communication or network outages.

This development is of particular interest to the Swiss transport and logistics sector. The army is one of the largest logistics organizations in the country and relies on a dense network of vehicles, workshops, storage locations, and external partners. Therefore, the planned adjustments are likely to have an impact not only on military supply but also to provide impulses for civil logistics, warehousing, and crisis management.

The reorganization is part of a comprehensive realignment of the Swiss Army. It aims to ensure that the armed forces have a reliable, decentralized, and resilient logistics system in case of emergency.
