Swiss Post invests in electric fleet & sustainability

For Swiss Post, it is clear that the future is focused on net zero. To achieve this goal, the company is not only investing in its own operations but also taking measures along the entire value chain in collaboration with partners. Since 2021, the Post has made significant progress: over 9,000 vehicles, which corresponds to more than half of the total fleet, are now electrically operated. Additionally, 66 percent of building areas are equipped with renewable heating systems, including heat pumps.

Progress in the vehicle fleet

By the end of 2025, the Post is expected to operate more than 57 percent of its total vehicle fleet electrically, which corresponds to over 9,057 electric vehicles out of a total of around 15,700 vehicles. For the delivery of letters and packages, the Post uses about 10,500 vehicles, of which around 6,000 are electric tricycles and about 2,000 are electric quadricycles. This corresponds to an electric share of around 70 percent in the delivery fleet. Compared to 2021, when only about 6,000 electric tricycles and 260 electric quadricycles were in use, there is a significant increase. Currently, more than half of the packages are already delivered with an electric vehicle. Starting in 2025, the Post will deliver electrically in several urban centers in Switzerland, including Zurich, Bern, and Geneva.

In the area of postbuses, the Post operates a total of 2,390 vehicles, of which around 143 will be electric by the end of 2025, representing 6 percent of the fleet. For comparison: in 2021, there were only five electric postbuses in operation. Furthermore, the Post has expanded its rail network and increased the number of daily connections between sorting and distribution centers from 70 to 90 to promote freight transport by rail. Swiss Post Cargo operates 721 trucks, of which seven will be electric by the end of 2025. Additionally, some heavy-duty vehicles are powered by alternative fuels such as biodiesel or hydrogen.

Sustainable buildings and value chain

The Post has also renovated its buildings and constructed them according to sustainability standards. By 2025, 66 percent of buildings in Switzerland will be equipped with environmentally friendly energy systems such as heat pumps or wood pellet heating systems. Since 2021, 25 buildings have been energetically modernized, and seven new buildings have received the Minergie standard or a certificate from the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB).

Together with subcontractors, the Post is working to gradually decarbonize remaining road transport between sorting and distribution centers through the use of alternative drives. In 2025, subcontractors for the Post will cover over 84 million kilometers on the road, of which more than 23 million kilometers will be with alternative drives, representing a doubling compared to 2021.

Commitment to renewable energies

The Post relies on renewable energies and exclusively uses electricity from certified sources. Additionally, its own electricity production is being further expanded, with the share of solar power production from its own photovoltaic systems expected to rise to 10 GWh by 2025. By the end of 2025, 2,600 charging stations will be provided in Switzerland for the electric fleet, which partners and third-party customers can also benefit from.

The Post continuously pursues the goal of reducing its CO2 emissions. For the emissions that have not yet been reduced, the company takes responsibility by advancing the establishment of a portfolio for CO2 removal and storage and supporting climate protection projects outside its own value chain.
