SBB to introduce digital guidance system by 2030

The SBB plans to introduce a new digital control system for rail traffic in Switzerland. This system is set to be gradually implemented starting in the 2030s, aiming to increase the capacity of the rail network and make operations more stable and flexible. To ensure ongoing operations until the new system is introduced, SBB has decided to extend the existing contract with Siemens for the current Iltis system.

Modernization of Rail Control

With the procurement of a new digital control system, SBB aims to enhance the efficiency and performance of the rail network. Staff in the operational centers are on duty around the clock to monitor and manage passenger and freight traffic. This demanding task requires modern technical support to ensure safe and punctual operations in the future.

The current central system, Iltis, has been in use for over 30 years. Given the increased demands on rail control technology and ongoing technological developments, SBB plans to procure a new system that meets current and future requirements. This new control system is intended to be closely integrated with digital interlockings and the timetable system, complying with international standards.

Timeline for Implementation

The tender for the new control system is expected to begin in 2027, with SBB adhering to the rules of public procurement law. The gradual introduction of the new system is planned for the early 2030s. Until then, the existing Iltis system will remain in operation, which is essential for reliable rail operations. To ensure safe operations until Iltis is replaced, SBB has extended the contract with Siemens. This contract extension was published on Simap on July 29, 2026.

Technical Support and Value Creation

Changing the provider for the support of the existing control system is not possible due to technical and legal circumstances. Siemens, the developer of Iltis, holds the intellectual property of the system and is the only company with the necessary technical knowledge for continued operation. The maximum cost framework for technical support until the planned replacement of Iltis by 2045 is 280 million CHF. The services will be provided by Siemens Mobility Switzerland in Wallisellen, ensuring that value creation remains entirely in Switzerland. SBB plans to fully implement the new rail control technology system by the early 2040s, which could lead to a reduction in costs associated with Iltis technology.
